Parents have been given the ability to check their children's grades online. Almost every school district has a website in which the parents can check in on how their child has been doing in school. It can range from grades, schedule, attendance, and assignments. Why would school districts do this? They see it as a chance for parents to be involved in keeping their kids on track academically. Dusty Blakey, director of schools in the Colonial School District in New Castle, DE, said "Teachers don't have to publish everything and they don't have to put it on right away, but we suggest they be transparent and put everything as it comes in. We don't want parents to be surprised by anything." This just shows how they are trying to get the parents involved. But some parents take this freedom of basically having the teachers grade book in front of them too far. The main idea of having these online portals is to give the children some type of responsibility for their own work and to keep them selves on top of their school work. If parents become too involved, the kids will rely on them to get them to do the necessary work and not be as motivated to work hard on their own.
I see the online portals for grades as a good way for the students to stay on top of their work. Personally, I never had a big problem with getting my work done. My parents would periodically check in on my grades maybe once a week, but it never got out of hand. Overall, I believe the parents who hover over their kids grades constantly, are the parents of kids who don't do well or flat out don't try in school. It all depends on the student.
