TheChive is an online, international community that posts pictures and stories. Usually the pictures are of scantily clad girls, college debauchery, quotes, beautiful scenery, and any random events that users submit. There are themed galleries for all of the above, but every once in a while, a request is asked of all Chivers for donations, and boy do they deliver.
For example, a US veteran was shot 13 times and underwent a year of countless surgeries. He had the support of his family, his girlfriend, his unit, but was severely lacking in monetary support to pay for these surgeries. A couple bullets hit his spine, disabling him. His entire home had to be renovated to accompany him and his wheelchair. All said and done, renovations alone are costing a minimum estimate of $60,000. The family was able to use and pool all of its resources to raise $45,000. That's when theChive heard about this story.
TheChive has its own charity to contribute to smaller, unnoticed campaigns in need. The charity comes mostly from Chivers (users of the site) as well as an occasional outside. On headline campaigns such as this one, a special gallery of pictures is assembled and the story told to try and raise more money. theChive's own charity donated $30,000 to Pesce family and asked if Chivers could find it in there hearts to donate. As of this writing, almost $30,000 have been donated by users, in addition to that of the charity.
I think this is one of the best things that can happen in society and a reassurance of our future. Total strangers are coming together to pitch in to help an American Veteran on his road of recovery, offering thanks, money, and well wishes. An online community like TheChive may seem crude, but this is an apt image of society, because so many people are willing to put aside their personal griefs to help someone who's needs are much, much greater than their own. An online community like this brings people together in a way that cannot be explained.
