Transgender Homecoming Queen Breaks Down

A transgender, teenage girl was bullied to cyber tears.  Cassidy Lynn Campbell, a male to female transgender was recently crowned her school’s homecoming queen.  She attends Marina High School in Huntington Beach California.
This past Friday, the 16 year old girl won homecoming queen.  It was the first time a transgender student won the title.  After a brief moment of happiness, her world came crashing down.  Her classmates gave spewed hate filled fords at her.  The overwhelming bullying caused her to make a video and post it on YouTube.  The video consisted of her sobbing in front of the camera saying things like “I'm so sad and so distraught and so broken down and so upset and so deteriorated and so tired of the world," she said. "I'm tired of life. And I know I need to be strong for the kids that I did this for and people I did this for, but I can't right now."  She even talks about if she’d be better off returning to her “miserable” life as a boy.
I chose this article because it is actually heartbreaking.  I think the fact that there was a transgender homecoming queen is amazing.  It is progressive and great for the LGBT community.  But I feel like since it is the year 2013, people should grow and mature.  There should not have been hateful things said to or about Cassidy.  She is a beautiful 16 year od girl and I’m sure that she deserved the crown.

  1. I agree with you that it's amazing that a transgender girl won homecoming queen in her highschool. Its truly a shame though, that her fellow classmates can't see how inspirational she is and deserving of the crown. Bullying is such a detrimental aspect of our society especially in teens and young people. This girl's achievements shouldn't be belittled by other peoples cruel attitudes and words.

  2. Sabrina,
How interesting that this year there is an ethnically Indian Miss America and a transgender homecoming queen. Times are slowly changing, but what all of the press has made me realize is just how racist and prejudiced many people still are (racist tweets after Miss America was crowned and the cyber bullying received by the homecoming queen...). We need to educate!
