Melisa: Response to The Control Room

I believe that the film The Control Room is a very effective film. Although I would say the intended audience of this film may not be for students of our age group, I believe it can be a structural importance in our society. I believe that students, the ruler’s of our future, should begin to learn how to critically think. I believe that this film has created a path in which students should follow; this path includes, learning, critiquing, and comparing. The media that revolves around us on a daily basis is designed to influence our ideas and understanding of the world in a particularly bias way. The government, and reporters, allow and don’t allow certain types of media to be covered to “protect us.” Or is this protection actually to control us? The government is ran by the people, or perceived to be, and if the people ever felt their country was disobeying the laws, they could potentially overthrow, or attempt to revolutionize it. So, this media, is emphasized in a specialized way, to appeal to the people.
I believe that finding different points of view on media can help the people understand to a full extent the truth of what a story actually is. And I believe that The Control Room did a great job on informing people, in our case students, that each different reporting station, and country have different views on the same events. Becoming a critical thinker can help students eventually become great leaders, by expanding knowledge and diminishing ignorance.
I also loved the exercise we did in class, although I would love to compare it to people in middle class situations in other countries, particularly those that are not first world countries. It definitely helped explain that America is a materialistic world, and it seems that the majority of Americans take for granted what they have.
