Ali Generelli's Reaction to Chasing Ice
Honestly, I did not expect to enjoy the film, Chasing Ice. However, the film was not what I expected. James Balog's passion toward the glaciers and his frustration toward global warming, was quite eye-opening for me. James is very passionate about making a global impact and I respect him a lot for this. I also appreciate the informality and casual speak that is used in the film because I feel it makes it easy to understand and relate to the purpose of the film. It is easy to follow and relate to James's dedication, interest and passion. When the stationed cameras were failing in the film, we saw James's true frustration. James showed us the power that is in the glaciers. I feel the glaciers do exhibit power because they tell a story. James studied them and learned information about the climate of the past in specific areas. I find this to be very interesting. Who knew we could learn so much from ice?

I love the line: "Who knew we could learn so much from ice?" I remember the first time when I learned to "read" the environment. I was at a science summer camp and we were dropped off in groups at different environmental sites, and then, simply from spending time there and being forced to observe, we had to reconstruct the "story" or "history" of the place. It was the hardest assignment ever! I remember failing. We found out that there had been a fire, and we'd missed the signs for it... What does it mean to pay attention to the landscape? What are we missing when we don't? Interesting questions.
