Morgan Harkness Chasing Ice

Chasing Ice was not only a revealing film about the Earth’s climate changes but a journey for a passionate photographer. James Balog said in the beginning that facts just aren’t getting to people. Numbers, statistics and reports are one of the last things the public is interested in. Looking at this issue at a whole new approach was refreshing and informative. I enjoyed this film not only because of the scenic pictures but also for Balog’s mentality. He felt it was his personal goal to show people what was happening to our planet. I also admired how he compared himself to an artist that devoted his life to painting faces. Balog looked at ice like that artist that looked at human beings, from a different perspective from the norm. They both realized the beauty of something that other people might not normally see. In conclusion, I think this film was a better way to inform people about this environmental issue and I enjoyed it.

  1. I love how you concentrate on the method Balog uses to try to persuade the public. I am one of those people who look at stats only after my mind is made up. Art impacts me. (But I know that there are those who would rather study stats than look at photographs.) I, too, admire Balog's drive. I want to feel so strongly that what I do matters.
