Zowie's reaction to Chasing Ice

Overall I thought that the film Chasing Ice was very informative and eye opening. Seeing all of the beautiful photographs of the glaciers and what has happened to them over the years, really put into perspective what is actually going on in our environment. Personally, I am not one who puts much thought into what happens in the environment and what global warming actually is. The reason for this  is,  before the film I didn't think it could affect me personally but now I know that my assumption was wrong. In the film, it said that the water will eventually be three feet above sea level and in my opinion that is a scary thing to think about because of the harsh affects that that could have. So this film really opened my eyes and helped me realize what is really going on out there and that it can be devastating not only in Iceland, Greenland and Alaska but also in places a lot closer to me.

  1. I know what you mean about information not really sinking in or seeming to matter, unless that information pertains to you personally. What's interesting, being my age, is watching--over my lifetime--winter in Vermont get warmer and more erratic (loads of snow at times, then heat waves). There was a horrible flood two years ago there. Before Katrina, I didn't pay much attention to floods. This summer I read a memoir titled "Wave," about a woman who lost her two sons, her parents, and her husband to a tsunami in Asia. Japan suffered a horrible flood recently (and the contamination from the nuclear power plant has just been declared more severe than originally presumed). I guess I'm just saying that in the past twenty years, I do think the weather has become more extreme. It's fascinating, too, to wonder about the human capacity for denial. Regardless whether one thinks humans are to blame, if we don't do thinks like Balog to try to stop climate change from happening, future generations will really struggle and we'll lose half the animal species on the planet, as well as innumerable plant life, pollinating insects, etc... Intense! What we don't know might really hurt us.

  2. I definitely agree with you about how this film has changed my opinion on climate change now. I did not realize that weather conditions are going to become more and more severe. We are not really noticing the change in climate here at home yet but this film displays that global warming could be affecting us very soon.
