5-month-old Baby Killed by Airport Baggage Carousel in Spain ~ Gab Brown

A tragic, preventable accident occurred at the baggage carousel in the Alicante airport in Spain, resulting in the death of a five-month-old baby. It is still unclear why and how the baby got onto the conveyor belt at the oversized luggage claim. A security officer at the airport reported she did not see what happened but heard that the mother placed the baby on the conveyor belt to reach for something, possibly her luggage. The mother, an American woman, was traveling with the five month old and another small child, from a London airport. The family was meeting the father, a Canadian man, at the Alicante airport. The death appears to be accidental but a further investigation will be pursued.

The heartbreaking death of the five-month-old baby must cause unimaginable pain on their family. The mother’s moment of poor decision has now led to a lifetime of loss. I do not know and can not even fathom what went through the mother’s mind when she decided it was okay to place her newly born child on a conveyor belt that carries oversized luggage. It is sad that she accidently caused the death of her own baby and will have to live with that guilt for the rest of her life, but at the same time, this tragic mistake could have very well been prevented.

  1. I am trying to come up with an opposing cultural component to this news article, but I'm having trouble doing so. Perhaps the way Spanish news reported on this event might be different from CNN.
I've Googled different articles, and the only strange thing is that the baby is reported to be Canadian in one article and British in the Spanish media.
