CIA drone casualty list being challenged. Luke Reno

A group called "Naming the Dead" has been started to name and number all of the causalities, civilian and otherwise, of US and UK drone strikes in Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen. This is an important task to keep in the news, these tiny, isolated villages are not even mentioned by the big news sources. Granted, more terrible things are happening in the world and violence sells, but this is arguable more important than Breaking Bad reviews. Civilian deaths are especially covered up because its hard to sound noble and heroic with terms like "collateral damage" and "wrong targets" thrown in.

As far as making a difference goes, this group has it cut out for them. Sure, the UK and the USA will be critiqued on these atrocities, but there are bigger things going on and these are two leading countries of the world in terms of economy and power. These countries have covered up their own military atrocities, like any country. Maybe, however, this will reach more American and British citizens so that more people can see how terribly awful drones are. Maybe Anonymous will riot over how much cover-up drone strikes gone bad have gotten and what that says about the rest of the government and what hasn't been totally covered up.

Maybe this will just disappear into obscurity like so much information on the Internet.

  1. Luke,
Thank you for this comment. I presented a paper on drone strikes last year at Bucknell. I'll share it with you, if you're interested. I think comparing U.S. and Pakistani news on drone strikes would be a fantastic idea for your Assignment #2.
