Cicadas Emerging- Ali Generelli

Living underground for the last 17 years,
Cicadas emerging into the world,
Their beady eyes adjust to the light

Free to move about after a long period of hibernation,
These little creatures roam in groups,
Their black bodies and clear wings covered with orange veins

They shed their skin,
And enjoy the light of the world,
Until they must return under the ground again

  1. I like the factual information but also the descriptiveness of it. I do wonder if the last line refers to them going into hibernation or wat happens when cicada killers grab them?

  2. "Their beady eyes adjust to the light" is my favorite line. It's so interesting. It makes me think about cicadas' eyes. What do they see? Do they have to adjust to the light? Metaphorically it gives me the sense of their long hibernation.
    Really a beautiful poem, Alexandra.

  3. This poem stood out to me. I HATE bugs! Reading this I could just picture those cicadas and imagine them flying all around. I like the imagery that you use in the is poem. It is very effective.
