Under the Sea Oddities
It turns out, that not all fish are as cute as you think. A species with the name of Psychrolutes marcidus, better known as "The Blobfish" was given the title of the worlds ugliest animal. This unique looking creature lives off the coast of south-eastern Australia and Tasmania. The campaign for the ugliest animal was run by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society. Now I know what all of you are thinking, there is no possible way that is a real organization. Surprisingly, it is indeed real and they declared the Blobfish as their new mascot for the ugliest animal.
The Ugly Animal Preservation Society is trying to raise awareness for endangered and aesthetically challenged animals. They created a campaign where more than 3,000 votes were given for the ugliest animal. The Blobfish collected 795 of these votes and took home the gold. The society's president Simon Watt left a comment stating, "We've needed an ugly face for endangered animals for a long time and I've been amazed by the public's reaction. For too long the cute and fluffy animals have taken the limelight, but now the Blobfish will be a voice for the mingers who always get forgotten."
I was intrigued by this article because I love weird things that most people don't even take the time to acknowledge. I'm also a very big fan of creatures that live under the sea. I would have to agree that the Blobfish is one of the ugliest creatures I've ever seen, but it's also one of the most alluring.
I almost do not believe that there is an Ugly Animal Preservation Society. I have to agree though. This fish does not even look like it will be able to swim.
