This Article touches on how members
of Generation Y (birth dates from the early 1980s to the early 2000s) have affected
the workplace and members on Generation X as well as baby boomers. Some feel
that based on “recent research from EY suggests that Generation Y workers,
the “Millennial generation,” feel “entitled” and are not seen as hardworking
team players. However, some feel that this is based on the opinions of older
coworkers.
The author, Micha Kaufman, goes on to talk
about how potentially imperative it is to have a vast array of workers from
different generations within a company to allow for accommodation to the masses
as a whole. With the advances in technology that we are currently undergoing,
it only seems logical to have workers who are comfortable working with these
types of technology and know how to show other generational workers how to use
them.
An important point that Kaufman makes is
that Generation Y workers, “being the first truly social-mobile generation,
they have very different expectations about office life.” That being said,
adjustments will constantly have to be made on the part of companies to keep up
with the generational shifts.
As a member of the ‘Millennial’ generation
I do believe that we have a lot to bring to the table in terms of skills and personality
in the workplace. However, there are sure to be some out there that feel
entitled to certain positions based on having skills that older coworkers may
not have. Overall, we as a generation will probably work hard to do great
things and help advance out fields.
