There is an odd new rule being put into effect for
the annual Hong Kong marathon. This year, due to complaints and problems from
the 2013 marathon, runners are asked not to take photos of themselves with
their cell phones while running in the marathon or crossing the finish line. In
February of 2013, a woman tried to take a picture of herself while she ran the
race, but she ended up dropping her phone. She stopped without warning to pick it up,
causing runners behind her to trip and fall. After much discussion, the
marathon organizers have decided that there is no way for them to completely
ban cell phones because people would find a way to sneak them in. Instead they decided to ask
runners to refrain from taking photos at the starting line, finish line, and
while running. They plan to air commercials and put up signs to remind runners
of this new rule.
I
chose to write about this topic because after seeing the headline, I thought it
seemed like a weird rule to have and I didn’t understand why anyone would need
to tell runners not to take pictures while they run. I figured that it would be
assumed that it isn't the best idea. Although I use my
phone a lot, I know when it is time to put it away. I think that it’s crazy how
obsessed people have become with their cell phones- so much so that they feel
the need to take pictures of themselves while running a marathon. Stories like
this make me wonder what goes through people’s minds when they do things.
I completely agree with you on this. Taking a "selfie" while running should not be something a government has to tell it's citizens. It just goes to show the lack of common sense people have sometimes.
ReplyDeleteI feel like it would be extremely difficult to take a "selfie" while running. If the organizers of the marathon were smart they would not hold the marathon on a Sunday to ensure that no selfies are taken.(Selfie Sunday)
