Reaction to “Climate
Wars & Climate Peace”
In the chapter Climate
Wars and Climate Peace from the book Making Peace with the Earth by Vandana
Shiva, a passionate author portrays a message. The title of the chapter is
self-explanatory. Vadana explains the “political war” going on with the
climate. She spoke about the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen and how it was one
of the biggest movements for climate change.
The other half of the title explains what should come from
this. Although various issues like the Himalayas, Ladakh etc. have been
addressed there are still staggering statistics about future events. She
strongly believes that if changes aren’t made then the Himalayas could
disappear by 2035. Vadana wants climate peace to be reached. She also took a more emotional approach in
part of this chapter instead of using statistics she spoke about multiple
deaths throughout the world. By the looks of it, many people have died from
these issues and many more will die in the future. Overall, I thought it was an
informative chapter but I didn’t like how she represented her message. It came
off as forceful. The message was difficult to decode at some points. I think
her portrayal of the issue is different from someone like James Balog’s
approach.

Rhetorical Analysis
Author: Vandana Shiva
Title: Making Peace with the Earth
Date of Publication: 2013
Publisher/Distributor: Pluto
Press & Fernwood Publishing
Tone, Syntax & Language: Her tone throughout the chapter is
forceful. You can sense its something she feels strongly about. It’s very
informative but not something someone would necessarily understand without some
research if they didn’t understand the politics behind the issue.
Intended Audience: The anti environmentalists, scientists, global warming
activists, middle class citizens
Context: To explain false assumptions made about these
environmental issues and raise awareness about the Himalayas and its huge
effect on the world if this issue isn’t addressed.
Purpose: Shiva’s purpose is to educate the public on what she feels
strongly about. She explains how the environment has affected the world
physically and financially. She is trying to prevent future predicted events
from occurring.
Author’s Process: This informative chapter was filled with
convincing information. She uses her forceful passion to paint a future picture
of what will happen to the world if changes are not made.
