Analyzing
film: Chasing Ice v. Ice Portraits of Vanishing Glaciers
(Merrilee Viguers)
These two astounding products are both
produced by the famous James Balog; who is known for his breath-taking
photographs. Some of his work has made it into the National Geographic magazine
and he has won many awards for his passionate work. The two products are
extremely well known for their spectacular imagery as he crosses boundaries into
studies where nobody else has gone. In his documentary movie I feel he did a
better job highlighting the scary reality of climate change. In the film the
view can get a better understanding of what’s going on rather than blindly
flipping through pictures. Granted once the view watches the documentary they
can get a better understanding of what is occurring in the pictures and how
global warming is to blame. The movie also gets into the scientific factors
that result in climate change so the film Chasing
Ice becomes an informational tool to further spread information on what
is occurring and how if we don’t change we won’t have a bright future. The book
Ice Portraits of Vanishing Glaciers is
more focused on capturing the beauty of the ice. Balog’s techniques are not
only capture the Glaciers beauty, he also illustrates the effects global
warming has on those blocks of ice. He features them in a way that depicts
global warming as a reality wake up call. I enjoyed both pieces because it’s
inevitable that he has a passion and truly cares about what is happening to the
environment and by utilizing his talent he is able to spread knowledge on a
larger scale. I still liked the movie better because I feel her did a better
job of showing how the world is falling apart.
