SUMMARY OF POSTS 9/15 (as of 9 pm)

Sabrina: Police officers shot two innocent bystanders while trying to subdue a person who mimicked shooting the police officers. The suspicious man was not wounded. Why were the police were even shooting at the man? One person even said “Don’t shoot him no more.” 

Gab: Abdel, a seven-year-old boy has lived in a ten-by-ten foot cement floor tent along with his mother, and two younger brothers for four months. His father remains in their two-bedroom home back in Syria. Six million Syrians have already been forced from their homes due to the constant violence. 100,000 Syrians have already lost their lives. Just last month, 1,400 Syrians died in a chemical weapons attack.

Nate: Japan will shut down its final functioning nuclear power plant in Ohi on Monday. It is said that the next time Japan will be able to consume power from nuclear plants could be in December. People are working to make the safety standards of these nuclear plants much higher in order to regain public acceptance of these plants…. before Fukushima thirty percent of Japan’s energy came from nuclear power plants.   

Melisa: Lyons, a town in Boulder County, has been named an “island” because it is completely surrounded by water from the overflow of the rivers. President Obama signed an emergency order that approves federal disaster aid for all of Boulder County, Colorado. Three people have been reported dead, with at least one missing person.

Brielle: Alexis Kahn, a 22 year old babysitter, was recently found guilty of child abuse and sentenced to one to three years in jail in South Carolina… the child’s parents were alerted of the abuse by their dog’s odd behavior toward Kahn. The Jordans…placed an iPhone underneath the couch before they went to work one day and secretly recorded Kahn’s interactions with their son Finn…[The recording] began with Kahn screaming and cursing at the baby, and then slapping sounds were heard…

Tommy: President Obama pledged to address climate change in June. He is working with the EPA to propose limits on power plant greenhouse gas emissions from newly built power plants. These will be the first ever limits placed on power plant pollution. Experts say that it almost certain to face a court challenge. Operators of coal-fired power plants believe that these new limits could cause their plants to become unprofitable and few plants will be built in the future...

Morgan Hayward: …not all fish are as cute as you think. A species with the name of Psychrolutes marcidus, better known as "The Blobfish" was given the title of the world’s ugliest animal. This unique looking creature lives off the coast of south-eastern Australia and Tasmania. The campaign for the ugliest animal was run by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society that is trying to raise awareness for endangered and aesthetically challenged animals.

Morgan Harkness & Olivia Mohnacs: After 10 months of restoration, Seaside Heights is on fire. The estimated cost to restore the boardwalk will be millions. More than 50 businesses were damaged.

Charlene: Ever since the 2008 recession, funding for Philly’s schools has been minimal because in Pennsylvania the funding comes from taxes. In fact, according to the 2010 census, 44 percent of school revenue comes from property taxes; the national average being 28 percent. School funding is lower now than it was in the midst of the recession in 2008. Per student, the state of Pennsylvania is spending $192 less than in 2008. In 2011, Pennsylvania’s average state funding share fell to 34 percent while New Jersey’s raised to 37 percent; PA is the tenth lowest in the nation. West Chester is a public school and is being directly affected by this lack of funding.

Heather: In Yemen, child marriage is actually legal. It was said that most girls in Yemen are given away to marriage before they are fifteen years old to men much, much older. In the case of this article, a little eight-year-old girl was found dead on her wedding night. She was said to have suffered internal injuries. This eight-year-old girl was being wed to a forty-year-old man. …people from Yemen are…fighting to have child marriage outlawed…

Zowie: An eight week old puppy was found outside in scorching heat with a chain weighing almost double the weight of the puppy around his neck. This is standard procedure for a dog in training to become a fighting dog. This puppy did not even have a name. It was referred to by a number like most fighting dogs are. …the ASPCA…do[es] whatever it can to get these dogs back to normal. All of the dogs…aren't just afraid of humans, they are afraid of almost everything…

Olivia: …this generation would have an amazing time putting together the next Woodstock. Music is very important to this generation… [But]… it is not possible to have another one of these huge music festivals… young adults these days don’t have much time for recreational actives due to standardize testing and …no famous artist would do any of this for free. They are way too consumed now with status and money… the article starts bashing today’s music. 

Clayton:…more unnecessary Justin Bieber attention… Let him do what he wants and leave it at that…. I chose this article…just to show how dumb I think people can be and how easily you can get people’s attention with an un-newsworthy article that somehow made the home page of Yahoo.

Evan:… during the wee hours of Saturday morning in Ohio on Interstate-75, a Greyhound bus lost control and flipped over, injuring 30 people. Although the injuries were not life-threatening, 6 people were taken to the hospital in a helicopter…

Katie: …on Saturday, September 14th, Pennsylvania reported the first death due to the West Nile virus… This virus is transmitted from infected birds to mosquitoes, and from mosquitoes to humans. Ultimately, this virus could lead to severe inflammation of the brain. The main victims of this virus include the elderly and those with weak immune systems…

Morgan Gass: Early Saturday morning in North Carolina, an unarmed man was shot and killed by police… sources say that Ferrell was only looking for help after supposedly crashing his vehicle… Officer Kerrick was charged with voluntary manslaughter and is being held on a $50,000 bond. He turned himself in on Saturday afternoon.

Sarah: Generation Y workers, the “Millennial generation,” feel “entitled” and are not seen as hardworking team players… Generation Y workers, “being the first truly social-mobile generation… have very different expectations about office life.” That being said, adjustments will constantly have to be made on the part of companies to keep up with the generational shifts.
