Tess Hayward: Sink hole

The ground beneath you disappears
a hole forms in the earth

It can happen at your own home
A place that you consider "safe"

It can swallow you whole
Compatible with the size of Lake Erie

Always be cautious
They sneak in from below

Are you safe?

  1. So cool that you looked up "sinkhole," after we slaughtered the end of Kimiko Hahn's poem, "Icebreaker." I eventually thought of what I wanted to say about the ending: it's a dissing of the Arctic. The apathy we all embody as we stand filling our cars at gas stations is captured in that last dismissive line: "That Arctic sinkhole."
