Making Peace with the Earth: Climate
Wars and Climate Peace
Date of Publication:

Tone/
Syntax/Language: The language and tone in this piece of
writing is very sophisticated and informational. Vandana Shiva is highly
educated and intellectual and it shows through her words when writing and she is very
persuasive. But she also seems angry with the way our country is handling this issue.
Intended
Audience: This chapter of the book, in a broad sense, is intended
for all people. The reason this is intended for all people is because everyone
is affected by the climate change. But
more specifically it is intended for people who want to see the change as much
as Shiva does. In an interview Shiva says “Making peace with the earth is now a
survival imperative,” meaning that in order to survive changes need to be made
in the world. Shiva is also targeting people who want to live in a peaceful
clean and safe environment which again, in broad terms is mostly everyone.
Context:
This section of Making Peace with the
Earth discusses climate change and what will happen in the future if the
climate continues to rise. Shiva gives many statistics about drastic and terrifying
things that could happen to our world. For example, she talks a lot about the Himalayas.
The Himalayas are receding at a very rapid rate and by the year 2035 they could
be completely gone. The reason why the Himalayas are receding so quickly is because
of the rapid climate change. She also talks about the shortage of water in many
small villages. For example, in Chakrata where women have to travel large
distances to retrieve water, a spring dried up completely making their water
supply even scarcer. All of the intense statistics and fact that Shiva gives in
this section of the book draw the reader in and really give a sense of what the
climate change is doing in the world.
Purpose:
The purpose of this piece is obvious. It is to inform the reader about the harsh
affects due to climate change all over the world. It goes into detail about how
different people around the world are affected in completely different ways and
how our Earths land is physically affected.
Authors
Process: This is a very short chapter but it is jam packed
with information. Shiva starts out by giving the reader just general information
about how countries are tied together and their views on climate change. As the
chapter goes on, it goes into more detail about what is really going on in our
world because of the warmer climate and what will continue to happen in the
future.
