The article I found for this weeks
current event is something I found to be important to my life now. Being in
college we are all exposed to sororities and fraternities whether we want to be
or not because of many involvement and activity fairs. In the article I chose,
a university in Alabama had a sorority that was accused of not allowing a girl
into their sorority based on her race. The girl that interviewed with CNN said
that the girl attempting to join had a very astounding résumé and was a
wonderful person. When it came time to vote in new recruits there was never a
conversation about this girl because she was of a different race. The girl
interviewing told CNN that she honestly believes that if the girl were not of a
different race she would have been admitted no questions asked.
I found this article particularly disturbing
for a few reasons especially as a college student myself. Firstly, because it is terrible for people to discriminate
based on race. Secondly, because there was only one person that stepped forward
to defend the girl not being allowed into the sorority. The interview talks
about how there were other people who approached the girl stepping forward that
commended her and said that they agreed with her actions but none that actually stepped up like she did. Thirdly, I was bothered by the part where the reporter tells part
of the motto of the sorority and how it says they will not discriminate yet
they wouldn’t let this girl in because of her race.
This is
something I found important to share with people because it’s not right that
stuff like this can still go on. Hazing was banned from sororities and
fraternities but discrimination is still allowed to continue at universities
like the one in Alabama. It also just makes me wonder what kind of people would
still want to be a part of that sorority or join it in the future because I
know that if this was to happen at West Chester I wouldn’t join.

It's not just that bad. There are still segregated proms in some schools in the Deep South. No joke either. Morgan Freeman did a documentary on segregated proms and how he paid for an integrated prom and this happened 3 years ago. That was one school, and they had segregated proms the next year. Racism is very prevalent in the South, and not so subtly either.
