RHETORICAL ANALYSIS
AUTHOR: Vandana Shiva was born in the valley of
Dehradun, to a mother and father who had a love for forests and nature. She
earned her Bachelor’s degree in Physics at St. Mary’s School in Nainital. Dr.
Shiva has fought for changes through many activist campaigns and contributed
her thoughts to certain topics such as biodiversity, property rights,
biotechnology, bioethics, and genetic engineering. As an advisor to governments
in India and a member of the Steering Committee of the Indian’s People Campaign
against WTO, Time Magazine identifies Shiva as an environmental “hero” in 2003,
and Asia Week has called her one of the five most powerful communicators of
Asia.
TITLE: Making
Peace with the Earth: Climate Wars and Climate Peace
DATE OF PUBLICATION: 2012
PUBLISER: Published in 2013 by Women’s Unlimited (an
associate of Kali for Women), New Delhi, India.
TONE, SYNTAX, LANGUAGE: This excerpt from Making Peace with the Earth is very
informative and intellectual as Shiva explains her point of view with the environment.
She is very persuasive in her work and has a lot of knowledge of how climate
changes can have many effects on the environment.
INTENDED AUDIENCE: Shiva’s work could be intended
for people who are skeptics, but I think she intended all people to read her
perspective on the environment. Some people in the world do not realize how
much damage is being done by climate changes and others choose not to do
anything about it. She is probably aiming to target people who want to help the
environment be safe and unpolluted.
CONTEXT: In this section of Making Peace with the Earth, Shiva is trying to inform the reader
about the drastic climate changes that are happening throughout the world and
how the government is not doing much to help the environment. She provides
evidence to her theories using statistics about what could happen to the
environment if no one makes an effort to help or change the way it is destroying
it. Her focus is on the Himalayas, where she explains in detail how global
warming is causing high temperatures in the Himalayas, which lead to a rapid
retreat of glaciers.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this excerpt is to enlighten
and inform the reader of the damages global warming is doing to the world’s surroundings.
Shiva’s intelligence and knowledge shows as she explains the destruction she
has come about to understand. She talks about the different areas around the
world and how each of them is affected in some way, so it catches everyone’s
attention.
AUTHOR’S PROCESS: Vandana Shiva did a lot of
research in order to gather all of the information she displays in Making Peace with the Earth. She starts
with giving background information about climate change and explains the
generic process of it. Shiva then goes into detail about the destruction it can
do to the world, and the affects it makes to the people living in it. She uses many
proven facts to back up her ideas, which really opens the eyes of the reader.
