Rhetorical Analysis of ‘Climate Wars and Climate Peace’

AUTHOR: Vandana Shiva: Born in 1952, daughter of a conservator of forests/ farmer, went on to earn a BA in Physics, a MA in the philosophy of science, and a PhD in nuclear physics.

TITLE: Making Peace with the Earth: Climate Wars and Climate Peace

DATE OF PUBLICATION: 2012

PUBLISHER: This book was first published in 2012 by Women Unlimited (New Delhi, India), then Pluto Press (London, England) and Fernwood Publishing (Canada), also published it.

TONE, SYNTAX, and LANGUAGE: This excerpt was mostly factual information and evidence of the Earth’s changing climate as well as some of the things the UN worked on surrounding the matter such as the Copenhagen Accord. The author clearly knows what she is talking about and uses language that allows those who may not know much about the subject matter to understand her points.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: I believe this book was meant to be read by a variety of audiences. Possibilities include skeptics (hopes to persuade them of the changing climate) as well as scholars who are invested in this kind of information and research.

CONTEXT: This chapter was about the failed efforts of helping the planet’s environment/climate, despite the world’s different governments coming together at the UN Climate Summit (Copenhagen, 2009). Shiva conducted research in various parts of the world and studied the Himalayas in particular because of heir impact on a vast number of people. She stresses a great importance on the Himalayas because they’re disregarded when it comes to global warming causing glaciers to melt.

PURPOSE: The purpose is to stress how crucial it is to protect our environment, both locally and globally.

AUTHOR’S PROCESS: Shiva conducted research around the world as evidence of the drastic change in the Earth’s climates. In this chapter, “Climate Wars and Climate Peace”, her research began at the UN Climate Summit in Copenhagen. Along with that, she researched the climate change in the third pole and finally the  water crisis in the Himalayas.
