Tess Hayward: Rhetorical Analysis of Making Peace With the Earth

Rhetorical Analysis                                                                                                     Tess Hayward

AUTHOR: Vandana Shiva was born on November 5th in the year of 1952. She is an environmental activist and  the author of more than 20 books. She received her M.A. in philosophy with a PhD in nuclear physics, and a BS in physics. After receiving all of her degrees she came to realization that she was more into science that involved our environment. She founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology, and Ecology, which then led to the creation of Navdanya (national movement that protects living resources). Dr. Shiva was most influenced by Mahatmi Ghandi because she wants to be able to change the world and make it a better place for everyone.

TITLE: Making Peace With the Earth

DATE OF PUBLICATION: First version-2012, our edition-2013

PUBLISHER: Pluto Press is based in London, and is an independent book publisher. They distribute their books to the US, and have been in business for 40 years.

TONE/ SYNTAX/ LANGUAGE: While reading these pages it seemed like there were many different tones. At first it seemed like she was trying to inform all of us about climate control. Then later on, her tone started to become very forceful and angry. It seemed like she was angry about how our world handles these issues.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: The intended audience seems to be aimed towards everyone and anyone. Its aimed towards everyone because we all are affected or effect the climate change. If she was targeting specific groups of people, I think it would be anti environmentalists, global warming activists, ad upper-middle class Americans.

CONTEXT: The chapter we read of Making Peace With the Earth discusses how serious climate change is and that if it continues to be ignored, our world could be in serious danger.Shiva makes this very clear to us by discussing frightening statistics within the chapter. She states that in order to keep the climate from rising two degrees Celsius, emissions need to be cut by 80 percent. It also discusses how the government has failed in all of their efforts to protect our planet, even after their largely numbered conferences( one was taken place in Copenhagen in 2009). One serious talked about issue is the Himalayas. Shiva focuses so much on the Himalayan mountains because due to global warming, the Himalayas have become flooded due to the melting of glaciers.

PURPOSE: Personally, I think the purpose of this chapter is to try and frighten, yet inform the readers of the global warming issue. Shiva is trying to stop future disasters before they can occur. It also emphasizes the importance if how we take care of our environment.

AUTHORS PROCESS: It was pretty obvious how strongly Shiva feels about this universal issue. She made this very clear to us with her forceful tone, but she made sure to keep you involved with everything that's taking place. Shiva researched climate change all around the world so that she was able to see the issue first hand. Her research began at the UN Climate Summit conference in Copenhagen.
