Yemen Child Bride- Heather DelGuercio

After reading this article I am appalled. In Yemen child marriage is actually legal. It was said that most girls in Yemen are given away to marriage before they are fifteen years old to men much, much older. In the case of this article, a little eight-year-old girl was found dead on her wedding night. She was said to have suffered internal injuries. This eight-year-old girl was being wed to a forty-year-old man.
I understand that this is part of Yemen culture but the ide of it is disgusting. Other people from Yemen are stating to agree because they are fighting to have child marriage outlawed, its just unfortunate for an event like this to happen for them to want to change the law.
They still aren’t sure where the child actually is, and rumors say she may be alive or secretly buried, either way I believe that children marriages should be outlawed. “Thousand of Yemeni girls have their childhood stolen and their futures destroyed because they are forced to marry to young”( Liesl Gerntholtz).

  1. Heather,
I read this article too and was astounded at the death of the innocent child. It's remarkable that what is considered an accepted cultural tradition in one place, like Yemen, is a criminal offense that warrants legal persecution in our society.
