Early
Saturday morning in North Carolina, an unarmed man was shot and killed by
police. A woman heard someone repeatedly banging on her door, thinking it was
her husband, she opened the door. She then realized it was not her husband and
called 911. Police responded to the call and found the “supposed” suspect
running towards them. Officer Kerrick fired at Jonathon Ferrell, age 24,
several times. He died at the scene.
However,
sources say that Ferrell was only looking for help after supposedly crashing
his vehicle. Police found a damaged car nearby. It is said that the car
belonged to Jonathon. Officer Kerrick was charged with voluntary manslaughter
and is being held on a $50,000 bond. He turned himself in on Saturday
afternoon.
I
chose this article because the title caught my attention. I thought it was
quite ironic how an unarmed individual going to the police for help is killed. We
are taught to trust the police to ensure our safety. When horrific events such
as this one occur, we begin to question our initial trust in the “system”. I found
this article intriguing and upon reading it I came to question - who do we
trust?

This post really caught my attention as well. I think it is absolutely horrific that the police did not even give the man a chance to explain himself. I agree that the system that we live in can be so corrupt. I do also think that it took a lot of strength for the police to turn himself in. I know the situation is awful and he has no reason for mercy, but it is an extremely difficult thing to do to turn yourself in for something that was very wrong.
