Late
Saturday night, about a dozen gunmen stormed into the Nairobi mall in Kenya and
fired, keeping many people hostage. The shooters left sixty-eight people dead,
175 injured, and over 30 in hostage until Sunday night during a tense standoff
with the police. The attack on Saturday had been the deadliest attack in Kenya
since al Qaeda blew up the U.S. Embassy there in 1998. Soldiers stayed outside
the mall holding their ground for the past two days. Earlier on Sunday morning,
three injured security forces were removed from the mall to get medical
attention, and about 1,000 people were freed by afternoon. Most of the victims
were Kenyans, but there were also many foreigners there shopping as well.
I don’t understand why there are so many attacks in the
world, especially within countries. It’s really depressing knowing that so many
people were taken from their families and friends from going to somewhere
people go on a daily basis. It’s scary to think that no one can be trusted, and
that a place that people usually would think is safe can turn very dangerous in
an instant. Back home I worked at the mall so it really makes me think about how
dangerous places can be, especially places I am comfortable with.
Lexie,
ReplyDeleteThanks for re-reporting on this. I saw today that police had bombed the mall--I think in an attempt to target the hostage-takers. Also, I saw something about religion mentioned. You might want to follow up on this. This would be an excellent article to use for your cultural analysis; you can probably find a Kenyan article that might shed different light on the matter at hand if you Google around.
