Melisa: Rescue of the Large Mammals

Sam Judah, BBC news magazine reporter, interviews Mackie Greene about saving whales entangled in fishing nets. This specific team of volunteers, (which Greene is a member of), are part of the Campobello Island Whale Rescue Team and specify there work in the Bay of Fundy off the east coast of Canada (Judah). In the bay, fishing has expanded due to the abundance of fish. Whales are directly impacted by the littering of the fishing nets fishermen leave behind. Greene explains the process of how to successfully disentangle the whales from the net. The first step, is to tire out the whales to keep them from continuously swimming away from the rescue team. Then, the team ties polyurethane balloons to the fishing net to keep the whale from diving deep into the ocean. From this point, the rescuers work vigorously to cut the giant mammals loose from the fishing nets. These crucial steps have proven very difficult, if any of them are approached in an incorrect manner it can put the whale in more pain or can cause more danger to its life. Greene, himself, has been helping rescue these mammals for 19 years.
I believe what Mackie Greene is doing is a wonderful thing. He has put his valuable time and effort forward to help a species that has been negatively impacted by the human race. I also believe that there should be no reason for this rescue team to have to take these actions. As a human race, we should be considerate enough to value the land, and ocean, from which we obtain our food which we survive off of. Again, as stated in the article above, we share this planet with other species, and to create a harmful living environment for them is just horrifying.
