Same Sex Marriage in New Jersey

Same-sex Marriage in NJ
Today New Jersey ruled that same sex marriage is legal and must be recognized as so. Previously, New Jersey recognized same sex couples as being in a civil union. Being in a civil union denies those couples of certain benefits “stipulated in the federal pension system,” some federal tax benefits, and the protections of the Family Medical Leave Act. Judge Mary Jacobson found the state of New Jersey responsible for not treating same sex couples equally and her decision mandates the state recognize same sex marriage. Same sex marriage is said to be allowed starting October 21, 2013. Governor Chris Christie’s administration is expected to appeal the ruling (Santora and Zernike 1).
This is an article I would like to do more research on and follow continuously. I think same sex marriage equality should be recognized by all 50 states and under the Constitution. Love is love no matter who it is one loves. I hope Chris Christie’s appeal is denied because it is not fair to those couples to miss out on benefits because of who they love. In my opinion, that is absolutely unacceptable. I’m interested to see how Christie maintains his argument if he runs for president in 2016.
Following this story through social media would be fairly easy in my opinion. On places like Twitter one could search for hashtags like “gay,” “marriage,” “LGBTQA,” and many other related phrases and words. On media sites like Facebook, I personally have “friends” who are gay and bisexual who keep up very passionately with these stories that I could interview and speak with about the credibility of certain sources. Instagram is similar to Twitter in the hashtags I can search and have sources to speak with.
I’m very interested in following something like this because it is changing the world right before all of our eyes whether we support it or not. It is something that is relatively easy to follow, support, and hear controversial arguments about. I think it will serve as a good story to get many different viewpoints and opinions on and I also think it would help to educate some who are ignorant on the subject.

  1. Charlene, I find it very awesome and convenient that you chose this article. In the past few hours my Instagram and Twitter feeds have been blowing up with news about New Jersey (where I live) and same sex marriage. This is a really hot topic right now and I personally think it is great. I definitely want to follow along and see what different people have to say about this as well. You're right in the sense that the world is really changing before our eyes. Good job!

  2. I agree with you that this appeal should be denied. Even though I'm pretty neutral on this issue, I'm a hopeless romantic who believes there should be no government influence on who people should be allowed to marry.
